Biography:

I was born near Hastings on the South coast of England, UK and grew up in a town called High Wycombe 30 miles outside of London. I attended the University of Manchester where I obtained a MPhys in Physics with Astrophysics. Following my undergraduate studies I spent a year backpacking around the world to counties including India, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand. I then worked for e2v techonologies Ltd as a test engineer. My role with e2v involved the testing of Si(Li) X-ray detectors for use in industrial applications.

In 2009 I begain my PhD research at the Open University under the supervisor of Professor Andrew Holland and Dr. Neil Murray. My research involved the development of CCD and EM-CCD technology for the use on future high resolution soft X-ray spectrometers. During this time I worked closer with Professor Randall McEntaffer as part of the OP-XGS team for the International X-ray Observatory. After my PhD, I continued working for the Open University as a Post Doctoral Research Scholar working towards the development of improved detector technology for the imaging of proteins at the Diamond Light Source synchrotron facility in the UK.

During this time I was awarded a summer fellowship from the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science to work for a 10 week period under Professor Hiroshi Tsunemi at Osaka University in Japan. The work in Japan involved the development of the focal plane camera array for the ASTRO-H (renamed Hitomi) soft X-ray imager.

In April 2014 I moved to the University of Iowa as a Post Doctoral Research Scholar to work for Professor Randall McEntaffer on the Off-plane Grating Rocket Experiment (OGRE) sub-orbital rocket and was involved in the launch of the Off-plane Rocket for Extended Source Spectroscopy (OGRESS) which launched in May 2015. In July 2016 I moved to The Pennsylvania State University as a Research Associate to continue my work on the OGRE sub-orbital rocket.

I am a keen road cyclist and an average Ultimate Frisbee player and when we get then chance my wife and I like to travel, especially to big cities.

Research Interests

My current research interests focus on the design, testing and implementation of high resolution soft X-ray spectrometers. I specialize in the design and implementation of grating alignment systems to enable multiple gratings to be aligned in all 6 degrees-of-freedom within a grating module. I then take these modules to be tested in X-ray beamline facilities around the USA and the world to confirm there alignment and ability to survive launch loads and in a space like environment.

I am also developing my understand of optical design for X-ray telescopes and, with my background in focal plane camera design, I am working towards a system level understanding of future X-ray space missions. This is also being aided through my involvement in the design of the OGRE sub-orbital payload.
